Today, the skills needed for traditional “on-your-feet” jobs and “office” work are blurring.
Automation, AI, and digital tools are transforming every workplace – even those you might not expect.
According to one recent report, more than three-quarters of jobs could be considered medium- or high-skilled in terms of knowing how to utilize technology.
The role of digital literacy
The need for some computer skills is becoming mandatory: Truck drivers now use GPS and route optimization software to improve efficiency, and electricians use digital tools to diagnose and fix issues more accurately.
Today’s workers now use technology in their daily tasks, reflecting its growing importance in traditionally manual jobs.
Whether it’s the rise of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software and robotics in manufacturing, self-service kiosks in retail, or virtual customer service representatives – being tech savvy and having basic computer skills are becoming essential for almost every new job opening.
Digital literacy is becoming more invaluable in the modern workforce, and the top employers are the ones who are adapting and embracing it.
Understanding the impact of AI
AI and automation are driving today’s most significant changes. Working Through Change: Adapting to an AI-Drive World of Work, a recent report from the Adecco Group, found that 40% of workers are concerned about their long-term job security as a result of automation and AI.
Their worries aren’t unfounded: The same report states that 13% of workers have lost their jobs because of it.
However, AI is not necessarily a threat. It presents opportunities for workers to be more productive. The Adecco Group research found that 28% of workers who save time using AI spend those extra hours on more creative work. This shift towards more strategic and creative tasks highlights an opportunity to unlock human potential and drive innovation.
The difference of upskilling and reskilling
To adapt to these changes, employers need to make upskilling and reskilling a priority for their contingent and permanent workforces.
With the opportunity to become “future ready,” workers can adapt in their current role – and be more proactive in developing a new career path.
Through upskilling programs, employers offer internal mobility by training existing employees – something 76% of workers believe companies should be doing before hiring external candidates. Upskilling not only drives productivity, it also fosters employee loyalty and engagement.
Aspire Academy at work
The Aspire Academy is just one example of how employers can support continuous learning and skill development. Supported by the Adecco Group US Foundation (the Foundation), Aspire Academy offers more than 3,000 web-based courses free of charge to Adecco associates.
The online courses cover a wide range of topics, from Microsoft Office to blueprint reading, and even offer courses and learning pathways on AI – machine learning, ethics design and management to name a few. The learning platform is designed to help associates upskill, reskill, and build the careers they want.
When we asked, 92% of associates said they would recommend the Aspire Academy to other temporary workers, and 91% believe the knowledge and skills gained will improve their placement potential.
One associate noted, “Aspire Academy has been an invaluable asset in my current job search. I am expanding my knowledge to broaden the spectrum of software development jobs for which I am qualified.”
Keep looking forward
The world of work has changed dramatically, and more and more research is coming in, stressing just how critical technology will be. Basic computer skills are no longer optional; they are essential for workers to stay relevant and succeed in their roles. The integration of technology into various industries has transformed the workplace, making digital literacy a critical skill for all workers.
By investing in upskilling and reskilling your workforce, employers can ensure their organization and their employees are prepared for the future. By prioritizing digital literacy and continuous learning, companies can build a future-ready workforce that is adaptable, innovative, and resilient.
